Brainstorming Session
It's not just the kitten below that needs a name. The holding company that I need to create to act as a parent company (mostly for tax and legal reasons) for all of my web site projects (of which WatchBlog is just the first) also needs a name. I've been thinking for weeks about this but everything I come up with has no domain available, is too hard to remember or spell, or makes no sense.
The name doesn't necessarily have to reflect the kinds of sites I'm building out, but it should be cool enough to not be ashamed to have it on a business card. Here is a list of things that I want to eventually be associated with this company name:
- Collaborative weblogs
- Possibly a literary/publishing connotation
- Online community
- News and journalism
Here are some real-world examples: Pyra Labs created Blogger, Six Apart created MovableType, Ranchero Software created NetNewsWire, and Macrobyte Resources created Conversant.
If you've got company name ideas stuck in your head and would like to contribute, you can leave them in the comments section of this post. I can't guarantee that I'll use any of them but I'm certain your ideas will lead to more naming ideas beyond what I can think of by myself.

Nah, it can't have "Cam" or "CamWorld" in the name because I'm not the only person involved in this up-and-coming venture - and becuase I'm too modest to have a company named after myself though I do have a sole proprietorship called "Cameron Barrett Consulting" I use for my freelance work.
I joked around a few years ago about registering camism.org and and camology.org and creating a fake religious web site to use as a tax-exempt status. Granted, it was just a joke but it'd be pretty funny to have a bunch of Camologists running around spreading the wisdom of Cam. :-)

Since I'll probably never get around to starting a company, I'll share the name I've always thought would be good for a computer-oriented company - the British/theatrical phrase: "A Bit of Business".

I love math:
Greater Than Communications
Ordinal Works
Least Common Productions
Zero Property Company
Mutually Exclusive Limited (oh, ltd is English)
Greatest Common Factories
There. I could go on, of course, but it's Sunday today :-)

Mutually Exclusive Limited (oh, ltd is English)
Actually:
Mutually Exclusive Incorporated sounds like poetry to me.

Hey Cam,
I understand completely why you wouldn't want to use you own name in your company, but the best boss and mentor I ever had, once gave me a great piece of advice... he said that if you put your name on your business, you will treat your company and it's reputation very differently. If your company is thought of poorly, so is your name.
Just a thought.
Good luck,
Lawrence

i'm a fan of the old school "captains of industry" vibe. i know you said you don't want cam in the name, but can't you just feel the the instant credibility of having something like:
camworld amalgamated industries
or drop camworld and just go with the suitably obfuscated:
amalgamated heavy industries
it leaves you room to grow into the import/export business.
